2010 YPI Student Mentoring Program

This year YPI is partnering with Sydney University’s Centre for Peace & Conflict Studies (CPACS) to run a youth mentoring program for schools wanting to strengthen their student-led activities in conflict resolution, social justice, anti-racism, anti-bullying, community service, and/or peer mediation.

The program will be run in two cycles in 2010, starting with the first cycle in Terms 1 and 2 (beginning in early March). The purpose of the program is to facilitate two-way learning between high school students involved in social justice and community-building activities, and Peace and Conflict Studies Masters students. Masters students are given the opportunity to learn what social justice, conflict resolution and peace education look like in the school context. In return they assist the school students to plan, develop, and implement their in-school, community-based, or international projects, as well as sharing their knowledge of peace and conflict studies theories and concepts. School participation in the first cycle of the program will culminate in student involvement in the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) Conference to be held at the University of Sydney from July 6 – 10, 2010.

CPACS graduate interns will be paired up with participating schools, which they will visit on a weekly or fortnightly basis, as agreed by the students, teachers, and principals involved. Interns will be required to produce analytic reflection papers based on participatory action research conducted over the course of the semester, which will be shared with the participating schools, students and teachers alike.
The first cycle will commence in March 2010.

For more information about this program, or to nominate your school to participate, please contact YPI on (02) 9351 3453 or via email (arts.youthpeaceinitiative@sydney.edu.au) as soon as possible.
